blue coffee beans and chignons

So I was being a bit reflective this morning while browsing through old posts (to mainly check out all your blogs and comment, sorry I've been so behind lately, I'm working on it, I truly am!) and I noticed a few things that I think need addressing:

a.) I need new backdrops. I think I'm running out of cool places to go and quite frankly, can't afford the gas to drive around all afternoon looking for "the spot." I'll work on this, folks. Until then, brick again! (See above)

b.) I need a tan. My legs are looking ghastly pale compared to my arms.

c.) I should stop hiding behind large sunglasses. And maybe try smiling once in awhile. You know, to make it look like I'm somewhat enjoying myself and not depressed about a cat dying.

Whew, glad that business is out of the way. On to the outfit...this dress (with a print that looks like blue coffee beans) was originally floor length with a great pleat thing going on for the skirt. I, being the impatient and impractical DIY-er that I am, started cutting. That's right. Didn't measure it. Didn't pin it. Didn't care. Ha. What I soon realized though, is that I should care. My hem was all off, with one side being way shorter than the other.

Scared at the thought of actually sewing to fix my boo-boo, I threw on a belt, started tucking the dress in on the sides to give it a fuller, cinched and ruffled look, and walked out the door with a chignon adorning the side of my head.

I'm sure all of you sewing-savy ladies out there just cringed. Or had a mini stroke. Maybe both. Sorry! Please don't fashion blog black list me. Please?

Dress: Vintage full skirt dress
Shoes: Black ankle boots, Payless
Belt: Vintage black belt

  1. So creative! I can't sew to save my life. I will now consider long dresses fair game to my scissors.

  4. Oh man, don't I know that feeling! I did the same thing once to a skirt and my mom yelled at me for not cutting it PERFECTLY straight (which is damn near impossible really, even if I do know how to sew).

  10. yeahhh....I am completely the same way! I have no patience for pinning, ironing, measuring, etc. I just cut and hem. It would save me so much time (not correcting mistakes) do just take the time and do it right the first time, but I just can't!! The dress looks super cute!

  12. Krystal, I will seriously be your blogger best friend or whatever the hell it would be called if you SHRED your jeans like CRAZY!! I'm SOO addicted and I keep thinking of which other pairs I wanna do it to. I'm thinking of a dark blue pair. I know what you mean, I was kind of scared of that too because those stupid pants were from UO! I took a sharpie and drew where I wanted the lines to go from so they were somewhat even-then I took like a deco/art knife and made small slices going up and down on the sharpie mark. Then I would shred across the entire thing and pick at the fraying! The second leg looked better than the first so I just went back to fix the first by tearing a little more!

Easy PEASY, you got this! I seriously almost laughed when I read about how you're an impractical DIY-er, same goes!

Congrats on going to the NYC thing! How'd you even get that!?! SOO COOL. I wrote you a novel...soooo yes, adding you to my links <3<3

  14. I actually quite like the quirky hem line!
And I do love sewing, but I understand your impatience. Hemming is such a pain whe you just want to wear it!

  16. You wouldnt even know it wasnt supposed to be like that if you never said anything. I love the idea of scrunching up the hem under the belt... it looks fabulous! Great job... cuter outfit.

  17. Its a super cute dress! I am a sewer and don't blame you at all for the tucking. I hate...HATE shortening and mending with a passion...BORING!
Way to sex it up and yes I would like to see what your face looks like...

  18. the dress is adorable, and i would never notice a hem issue! so no lectures from me... but let's just hope Noel doesn't see this post because she is stricter about these things. just think of yourself as an 'intuitive' sewer. that's what i do. ~joelle

  19. This looks great! dont worry we couldnt see your non DIY skills lol. I love the color!

  20. haha, your hem looks fine and i like how it actually goes up on the sides, but it is true what joelle says, i do give her many scowls at her sewing shortcuts. however, i just had a similar i-don't-care-i'm-just-going-to-cut moment recently and now i've got an asymetrical skirt.

and no tans! joelle and i have been working hard this summer at avoiding all tanning. it's been working out quite well (note our paleness). but i do agree that you hide from the camrea a bit :) i'm pretty sure there was a post of you not long ago with no shades and no hiding, and i didn't even recognize you at first!

  22. Yay, I love that you don't measure or sew! I'm so flippin' jealous of all the DIY sewing ideas out there, since I can barely wield my scissors without messing things up. You, however, look amazing. Glad you busted out the scissors.

  23. Ha! I would do the same thing; I'm a terrible seamstress. But give me a pair of scissors and a cute belt like that, and we're in business! I'd be out the door, too. The print on that dress is awesome, and I love the collar. I don't know if I could "DIY" a long vintage gown like that. You did the right thing!

  24. hah! that sounds like something i'd do... and the neckline on that dress is pretty cool, too.
