a little help from my friends

Well, let's get the obvious out of the way first: Here's one of the Rodarte dresses I managed to snag at Target the other day. My plan of waking up early to scope out the fresh merch was spoiled by, well, life. But it was nothing a little luck at the dressing room couldn't fix. I spotted this pale pink/nude number hanging up as someone's discarded dressing room item, and it luckily was in my size. A bit of a hefty price tag, but all in all, I think this is one of the best designer lines Target has had in awhile. Stay tuned for the second dress!

In other news, I'm starting something NEW and need help/advice/tips/insider information. I'm looking at moving to New York City very, very soon and aside from applying my ass off the past couple of days, any tips from you lovely readers about cheap living situations, possible jobs (preferably writing jobs but I'll take anything!), internships, good street corners with friendly bums that I could live on, ANYTHING, would be much appreciated!! I'm just sort of diving in here and would love to hear from you New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers alike.

It would mean a lot to me.

If you feel more comfortable, please feel free to shoot me an e-mail: krystalbick@yahoo.com. And if anyone out there is interested, I have a resume, writing clips, styling portfolio and letters of recommendation all set to go. Just ask! I'll send!

Thanks guys! Fingers crossed!

All the best with the NYC plans, I wish I had advice or a street corner to share with you(that sounds wrong) but alas I'm stuck North in Canada.

  12. I agree with piglet, I really did not like the dress before but I LOVE LOVE LOVE how you're wearing it here.

As for nyc, I recommend Washington Heights (the jewish side to the west), Astoria and areas of Brooklyn near the river (..close to the city) for single person apts at good prices. And if you're willing to go the roommate route the upper west side and west Harlem (not scary I promise, very up and coming with young professionals) is an excellent choice, as well as East Brooklyn (by the river). All these areas are great for getting to central parts of the city no matter where you work...

Also, make sure you are within 8 block of any train (except the G) this will definitely save your butt if you don't intend to bring a car!

I wish you lots and lots of luck!!! sometimes the city is a struggle but completely worth it!

  14. I'm jealous you snagged one of the dresses! I really want the blue baby doll dress but when I got to Target on Monday they only had a few pieces left, and none in my size. Beautiful photos, too. Annie.

  15. Oh my gosh! WOW. You're just going to up and go!? Well honestly you are WAAAAAY too chic and wonderful for this place, but it makes me feel a little sad since I never really got to hang out with you in real life. I wish you the very best of luck. I know you will be successful no matter what. You look phenomenal in that dress by the way. That was the one I wanted but there is not way I could have competed with you in styling it. You have a special way about you. Also, thank you so much again for yesterday. SO much. my goodness, good luck girl.

  23. I agree with the above sections of NYC: Washington Heights, Queens and Brooklyn (greenpoint, williamsburg, park slope etc.) I lean towards Queens because that's where i'm from. If you plan on having a car there are some great areas in queens such as Kew Gardens, Jamaica Estates or forest hills. If you won't have a car then try to get a place within 4 blocks of subway access - areas such as Long Island City, Astoria and Woodside are all nearby trains.
    I hope this helps!

  27. ah man. that dress looks great on you. I put it on in the dressing room and quickly realized it wasn't for me as it made me look weirdly pale AND it wouldn't lay flat at all....basically made me look like a hot mess! happy to see how you styled it up!

  33. Wow! My sister just up and moved to New York last month! She found a girl on Craigs List who needed a roommate. She lives in Queens and has an internship that (with luck) is going to turn into something permanent. She is absolutely loving it! Do what makes you happy!

And, of course, you look fabulous :)

  34. Very exciting about the impending move to New York. Make craigslist your homepage - you'll have your apartment situation taken care of in no time, and if you need furniture, a bike, anything like that, you can get it all on the cheap. Also cheap: neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens (try Sunset Park, Prospect Heights, Long Island City, Astoria, etc. to save money without being too far from Manhattan), but there are still places in Manhattan to be had for reasonable prices...so I'm told. Personally, I stay in the outer boroughs - I like the feeling of leaving the city and coming home. Also, the MTA is cutting some trains this year, so check that out before you commit to an apartment that might not be accessible after the W and G trains bite the dust. Good luck!!!
