New (old) shoes

Feeling black and white lately. Good news, move is 99.99999999 percent done. (I have the empty closet to prove it.) Bad news: I don't want to move. Other good news to counteract the previously mentioned bad news: Got some bitchin' new shoes today from the thrift store. They're such a beat up pair that I like to think someone tap danced in them. Can't wait to dress them up with something. Ah, the fix of an $8 pair of shoes. Works wonders, they should prescribe it more often.

Shoes: Tan jazz shoes, Saver's courtesy my lovely boyfriend (thanks, Ian!)

A little bit off the bottom ... a little bit more ... a tad more ... aha, I give you the cropped top. Coming to this blog (on me) soon.

agility

Scrabble word of the night: agility. Approximately 28 points and used all seven letters to make it. Scrabble master, I am.

P.S. Will have outfit post later today. Promise

the orange century

A five-chapter short story by Ian McAllister of The Sky Cave, recorded on a tasty four-track cassette recorder. And the videos are great.
Only wish I knew where some of these people are today. Enjoy.

Little miss sunshine

The aforementioned shoe shopping trip resulted in this brainchild of an outfit. It's fun when you let a pair of new kicks dictate what you'll be wearing.

Shirt: Black racer back tank top, Urban Outfitters
Skirt: White, high-waisted skirt, America Apparel
Accessories: Floral printed silk scarf, Urban Outfitters
Shoes: Yellow gladiator heels, Nine West

her morning elegance

Love it.

Rompin' around

I love Mondays off. Woke up, decided I wanted to go shoe shopping, the boy voluntarily agreed to go (he regretted it later), had an amazing breakfast, went for a calming late afternoon run and lent my voice for backup vocal purposes that can be heard very soon on The Sky Cave. Oh, and this new romper I wore topped it off.

Romper: Blue, tube top embroidered one-piece, Miss Me
Shoes: Gold gladiator sandals, Gianni Bini
Jewelry: Bangle bracelets, gift
Sunglasses: tortoise shell way-farers, Ray-Bans

Oh, to be French

Been crazy busy the past couple of days moving out of my apartment, i.e. I've been bumming around in comfy clothes since everything is going to be in boxes soon. In the meantime, enjoy this photo shoot for Vogue Paris of Charlotte Gainsbourg, the epitome of French finesse and style.

Graduation dress update

Here we are, lovelies. The graduation dress. THE graduation dress. And all in all, I thought it was a hit. I found it in a last ditch effort the day before the ceremony and within a few minutes of shopping in the BCBG section of Dillards, I found this beauty. The slightly bubbled hem, the floral fringe bodice and the high waist, perfect, perfect, perfect. Of course, I didn't don the faux glasses or the blazer (it was 90 degrees that morning), I just threw those in there for some fun spunk.

Dress: High-waisted, floral embellishment BCBG dress
Jacket: Navy blazer, Urban Outfitters
Jewelry: Long strand of pearls
Shoes: Simple black heels, Aldo
Accessories: Black-rimmed faux reading glasses

Little (white) dress

Wore this out for girls' night the other night. I love the neckline to this dress (albeit a short dress!) and the intricate necklace plays of it nicely. The only tricky part: making sure my red wine didn't end up on it. I believe that's what Alanis Morissette would call ironic. Don't ya think?

Dress: Long, T-shirt dress, The Niche
Shoes: Black leather gladiator heels, Steve Madden
Jewelry: Gold fan necklace
Purse: Black sequined clutch, The Gap

DIY little flower girl dress

Step #1 : Finding the right one.  Alright, so this took awhile to track down and was arguably the longest part of this process - finding the right dress. I searched countless thrift stores until I trekked into Savers one afternoon, where I within minutes found this one. Personally, I had a general concept for what I wanted, think Rachel Weisz's dress in a previous post. But of course, you have to have an eye for details. And that's exactly why I fell in love with this one. The pattern was dainty enough to look older than it was, the lace backing helped give it shape and of course, the flared short sleeves were oh so princess. But the final nail in the coffin were the pearls. So sweet, so innocent, so mine.

Step #2 : Snip, snip, snip. For my dress, I knew I was going to be wearing it with some pretty high heels, so I didn't want to cut off too much and risk it looking cheap. About 8 inches later, I had a rough hemline that hit a little bit above my knee. This part can be tricky though so you have to make sure you're pulling the fabric taut, to avoid any big length discrepancies.

Step #3: Sticky situation.  Fabric Fusion. A girl's best friend. OK, OK, at least her somewhat helpful acquaintance. I picked up this bottle of fabric glue for about $5 at Walmart, having never used it before, but the craft department associate swore by it. Turning the now-chopped and somewhat sleeker looking dress inside out, fold the bottom half and inch to an inch up and apply a thin later of fabric glue to create a clean hemline. (That's right, I glued the dress because yours truly is sewing impaired. And I don't think I'm alone.) Apply even pressure as you go around the entire dress and hang up to dry for at least several hours.

Step #4: Enjoy! I think you got it from here. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to a tea party.

Dress: Vintage, floral DIY dress, Savers
Shoes: Black studded gladiator heels, Steve Madden
Hat: Black bowler cap, Target

Smile

It made me smile anyway.

It's over

Wrote this Friday night, (er Saturday morning actually) before graduation. I was several cocktails and cigarettes deep when writing this and terribly past deadline for the Sparks Tribune. But I don't think I would have it any other way.

It’s 12:38 a.m. and I graduate from college in seven hours. Five years, several grandiose dreams about how to leave my mark on the world and one long day ahead of me in a “one-size-fits-all” gown — it all boils down to this.

This one moment.

And I feel, well, ambivalent.

Yes, ambivalent. Not ungrateful — quite the opposite, actually. For the past several weeks, I’ve been burdened with the annoyingly ubiquitous question, “What are you going to do after you graduate?” I temper my use of the word “burdened” because I realize just how lucky I am to be so-called “burdened” with that question in the first place.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m fortunate and I know it.

I feel ambivalent only because that aforementioned question, the dreaded words to any college graduate’s ears, is downright frightening.

Thoughts of “the real world” and “being adults” suddenly take on all new meanings that gnaw at me and keep me up at night. It’s no longer the question of “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Now it’s “What do you want to be when you grow up? And by the way, you have three seconds to decide, because this it, your life starts now … 3 … 2 … 1 … go.”

Wait, what?

Were we at starting blocks this whole time and I just didn’t know it?

But perhaps that’s not fair of me to ask. You don’t need me to tell you that I’m graduating into a world that has seen record highs for unemployment, an economy in shambles and, as any other print journalist will confirm, a job market that is seeing pink slips, final editions and doors closing indefinitely.

Understandably, the logical and sane-thinking person would be rushing out for a job. Hungry for it even.

But I’m still so goddamn ambivalent.

The catch? I think we all should be ambivalent to a certain extent.

Just a few days ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Jim. Jim, who happened to be shopping with his sister in the same shoe aisle as me at Target, is the jovial, grandfather-type who sneaks you an extra piece of candy with a wink.

After a random conversation that started over the genius behind flip-flops, Jim recapped much of his life for me, including teaching psychology in correctional facilities, being a real estate agent, raising a family in New York and now being the caretaker for his sister.

And he’s happy. He has a genuine laugh to prove it. I’m sure when someone asked him years ago what he was going to do when he graduated, he would never have described his life quite like it turned out.

And you know what? That’s OK.

Yes, plans are great. Yes, the education to back them up, even better. And yes, yes, yes starting that job on the Monday after graduation will give you security, especially now of all times.

But, on the other hand, it’s the ambivalence, the uncertainty — better yet, the unknown possibilities — that oftentimes make their own plans for you.

For the past several years, I’ve been a diligent journalism student. Took the courses, received high grades and even have been working professionally at the Sparks Tribune for over a year now.

Next week, I will be doing the unthinkable by quitting that job. It scares the hell out of me and, trust me, it never makes for a good answer to the post-graduation-plans question, garnering a combination of responses and raised eyebrows and stammers of, “Really?!”

Sometimes I can’t believe it either. It’s not the logical next step, and that’s why I like it. All my most recent educational and professional decisions have made sense, been planned and executed. Except for the graduating in four years part, but you get the picture.

Nearly 99.999 percent of my steps have fit into the “plan” because we emphasize figuring out that “plan” so much.

It’s 3 a.m. right now and I say, forget the “plan.” In less than five hours, I’ll be walking across that stage, shaking a sweaty palm and taking an out-of-step step for me. And it’ll feel good.

Or, to beg the question in the words of Bob Dylan, “Oh mama, can this really be the end?”

To all those graduating, it’s hardly the end. We’re just beginning and I’m excited to see what new — and unplanned — places that takes me.

DIY urge

I feel a DIY project coming on. Just picked up a nice staple item to cut up and play around with. Stay tuned.

Flower girl

Think '90s. Think "Blossom," minus the funny hats. Think Spring.
And that's what I'm looking for today. That and something to clothe myself in for graduation. Eegad. So much to do.

I love Sundays

Highlights from today: Breakfast with mom (it is her day after all), shopped for graduation dresses to no avail unfortunately, went to the river festival and enjoyed a tall and much needed glass of beer with some fries, rode my bike to the nearest arcade and battled in an unruly match of air hockey with my love, enjoyed a late afternoon shower and am now about to enjoy some cheese pizza. I came, I saw, I Sunday-ed.

Oh, and picked up this awesome statement necklace at (cough, cough) Charlotte Russe.

The short end of the deal

Wore this yesterday to work. Spent 20 minutes explaining the beauty of Urban Outfitters to one my interviewees after she complimented my vest. I love passing on a good store, it's like karma points or something.

Shirt: My boyfriend's white V-neck shirt from the bottom of his pile of clothes in my apartment that, might I add, is already busting at the seams with clothes
Shorts: Cut off shorts, vintage
Vest: Navy blue embellished vest, Kimichi and Blue, Urban Outfitters
Jewelry: Monocle charm necklace, Urban Outfitters
Hat: Straw fedora hat, Peter and Grimm

Casual Friday

For whatever reason, I end up getting stuck in a black, white and gray rut when dressing for work. That's why when I picked up this lovely mustard colored high-waisted skirt, it was a breath of fresh air.

Skirt: High-waisted mustard colored bandage skirt, vintage

I wish

Screw the cap and gown, I'm wearing this. Anybody out there wanna help me afford this one? OK, fine, fine, perhaps just the dress and shoes? Collectively that's only $1,000.

Dress: Aqua flowy drop waist, Top Max
Shoes: Satin shoe boot, Jil Sander
Jewelry: Marquis and Camus collection by Sarah Kang of New York
Purse: Black patent leather clutch, D&G

Hot off the press

Yep, yours truly did it. Five years and far too many bad decisions, it comes down to my named printed at approximately 10 point font on page A6 of the paper. And as is The Nevada Sagebrush's tradition (which is the student newspaper I work at) I was christened a new name for the final issue of the year. While I'm not exactly Carrie Bradshaw material, (I mean, who is?) I like to kid myself sometimes that perhaps one day, I'll have a closet that would make her envious and a syndicated column that would leave her grabbing for another cosmo.

Cheers!

Leather and frills and sunshine, oh my!

I think we're in the long haul now folks, summer hit today. Of course, that makes my dress-loving heart happy and content as after I left class this morning I dug out from the depths of my closet this gem from last summer - the classic white slip-like dress perfect for dressing up or dressing down. Today, I opted for the part of badass, hence the leather vest, a great steal that I've been dying to pair with something dainty like this for a long time now. The contrast between the two makes this outfit extremely fun to wear and yes, even gives off a bit of an attitude.

Dress: White slip-dress, Kimichi and Blue from Urban Outfitters
Vest: Vintage leather vest
Jewelry: Vintage gold medallion
Shoes: Gold gladiator sandals, Giani Bini (not featured in photo)

P.S. As evidenced in my photos, I could use a photographer soon. Any takers?

I spy ... graduation dresses

And so it begins: The hunt for the perfect graduation dress. Factors to keep in mind include a.) long hours of wearing a dark gown that will inevitably cover my dress (that's where heels will come into play) b.) it's going to be hot (unbearably hot) c.) must be wine-walk ready for after the ceremony. Oy.

Amen

Enough said.

Food for your ears

You should listen to this. You won't regret it.

Look ma, I'm a model (not really)

What a night. Too many shots of tequilla + Steve Madden gladiator heels + rad music = a good time. Thanks to all who showed up! And thanks to Jessica Schneider and all the other designers who helped put on an awesome event.
