on // off duty

Dress: Proenza Schouler (last seen here and here); Shirt: J.Crew; Shoes: Celine; Bag: c/o Rebecca Minkoff; Sunglasses: Karen Walker; Watch: Michael Kors

I often get asked how I decide which pieces to invest in and which ones to pass on -- something that I'm, in all honesty, still trying to figure out myself as I get older. I am, however, a firm believer in finding and ponying up for statement work dresses -- ones that can easily transition from a day full of meetings to cocktail hour afterward with just a few simple accessory changes. This dress in particular, a Proenza Schouler beauty I stalked for weeks before it went on major sale, is a great example of how just a few simple layers (under or over the dress) can make a huge difference in the overall aesthetic of the outfit. I felt polished at work but could easily ditch the button up shirt for dinner for two later on.

  21. I agree with you, when I was younger I would just buy a lot of cheap & cute things without really thinking about how often I'd get to wear it.. but now that I've matured I realized that I gravitate towards "investment pieces" and think twice about buying something to see if it can be versatile!

  22. Well said. Some items are defintely worth investing than others. Sometimes it is a learning process and there will be money "spent" during this process lol

  23. I agree with you about what items to invest in. I think pieces that are truly special and functional should be good quality, while other things that are super trendy and might be a wear-once item should be from somewhere like F21 or Zara.

  26. I always find stalking certain items can be good in the sale, shopping trying on and keeping really great finds on a list and then wait for the prices to drop a little or research discount codes is a great way of getting fashion for much less. so bravo for your wonderful dress!
